Technical glossary

There’s lots of special terminology in the World Wide Web, much of which you probably already know.  Just in case you missed them, these are some of the most common terms used on this website:

 

Webpage (page)

A webpage is a single rendering of inter-related information such as text, pictures, and videos, shown on a web browser.  Once you know that the context is websites, this term is usually abbreviated to just “page”.

 

Website

A website is a collection of usually interlinked webpages that all share the same domain name.

 

Internet

The internet is hardware (and the software that operates that hardware) that forms a digital data network, which makes it possible to share information between many different devices such as computers, smartphones, and tablets, which may be situated anywhere in the world.

 

World Wide Web (also known as the Web, and WWW)

The World Wide Web is an application that runs on the hardware of the internet, just as applications run on the hardware of your computer or smartphone.  The World Wide Web comprises documents called webpages, which are kept on devices that are connected to the internet all over the world.  The World Wide Web administers the names and locations of all webpages.

 

Domain name

A domain name is the name of a website from the point of view of the World Wide Web – a domain name is the main part of a web address or an email address, the part with full stops (dots, periods). 

 

For a web address, such as https://yoursimplewebsite.net.au/more-information, the domain name is yoursimplewebsite.net.au.

 

For an email address, such as enquiries@yoursimplewebsite.net.au, the domain name is the part after the ‘@’, which is yoursimplewebsite.net.au.  

 

Hosting

Hosting is providing a home for your website by storing its data on a computer somewhere and providing it with a connection to the World Wide Web.  You can find out about hosting for your Simple Website, here.

 

Web address (also known as website address, internet address, or URL)

A web address is what you type into the address bar on a web browser, which tell the World Wide Web where to find the data for a webpage.  A web address includes the website’s domain namehttps://yoursimplewebsite.net.au/more-information is a web address.  

 

Web browser

A web browser is an application that runs on a computer or other device, such a smart phone or tablet, that displays webpages.  Common web browser are Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer, Edge, and Firefox.

 

Search engine

The World Wide Web is an unstructured thing, which makes it hard to find what you want in it.  A search engine catalogues the vast amount of information that’s in the World Wide Web so that it can find what you’re looking for, for you.  The best-known search engines are Google and Bing, but there are many others.

 

Web-shop

A web-shop (also known as an online shop) allows customers of an enterprise to select, purchase, and pay for products (goods or services) from a website.  The selling process is handled entirely by the website, with no necessary interaction by any person.

 

Home page (also known as a landing page)

The home page is the primary webpage of a website.  It’s the webpage of a website that you will see if you enter only a domain name into the address bar of a web browser.  Any other webpage of a website will show the domain name and the page name separated by a “/”in an address bar.

 

Web log (blog)

A web log (usually abbreviated to ‘blog’) is a place on your website for you to add a regular topical commentary – it’s a bit like keeping a public diary of what is happening in your enterprise.  You can find out about a weblog on Your Simple Website, here.

 

Favicon

A favicon is the small image that appears on the left side of the tab on a web browser.  Usually, it’s a simplified version of an enterprise logo.
